How-to-hang Drapes
Drapery is an impactful visual element in a space. Besides adding privacy, drapery can instantly make a room more sophisticated and cozy. However, the composition can be off if the drape panels are too small for your window and walls. Here are a few tips to follow when choosing drapery.
1. Go wide
The biggest mistake I often see with drapery installation is using short rods for your window size. When your drapes are open, the panels shouldn’t cover any part of the window frame. I like to have rods that extend at least fifteen to twenty inches from the outer part of the window frame. Don’t be afraid to have long rods and enough fabric to cover the entire wall by your window. Wide drapery panels will make a featured window look big and grand.
2. Hang it high
Drapery rods should be installed at about six inches above the top window frame. If space allows, install rods at ten inches above the window frame or experiment by raising them even higher to create a lavish effect. Once the rods are in the correct placement, it’s time to think about the length of the drapery. Each drapery panel should be long enough to kiss the floors for a tailored look or create a puddled effect for a more luxurious look.
3. Patterned versus Solid Colored Fabrics
There is no right or wrong when choosing fabric for your drapes. Patterend drapery can be a fun design element to explore when designing a space. But if patterned drape panels feel like a risky move, choose a neutral color for your panels. Drape panels that blend with your wall color are a great option to layer your space whitout making the drapes the focal point in the room.
