Your Guide to Pool Design
I love to experiment with my own projects. When I design for myself there are no limitations. It's a time that I really try to embrace this passion I have for design and face my fears. If I am not sure how to achieve a look that I have envisioned in my head, I don't let the fear of now knowing the outcome stop me. For this outdoor plan, I chose materials that I have never worked with before, such as formed concrete pavers, Timber Tech, and a sandstone coping, but the result is exactly what I wanted.
We are utilizing every square inch of this backyard to create a functional outdoor space for this large family. There was no way the beach house could be complete without a pool. We chose a pool size that can be heated like a jacuzzi in the winter. The smaller the pool, the cheaper the gas bill will be. In addition, the pool size feels balanced with the backyard’s size. Due to its fast installation process, we chose a fiberglass pool. It can take as little as five days to complete this fiberglass pool installation and have it ready for decking.
The pool coping selected is 12×24″ beautiful natural sandstone. I love the color of this stone and its texture. Because we have an automatic cover for this pool, the coping installation gets tricky. The challenge is to install coping above the pool cover motor in a way that it can be removed for maintenance. I think the crew from Oasis Pool did an amazing job.
Around the pool, we’ve installed a deck to create a lounge area and walking room. The decking material is Timber Tech in weathered teak. The composite material is super durable, looks great, and does not require the maintenance of wood.
For the dining area, we created a dining space with formed concrete pavers that give it a modern look. We will also add a pergola for shade during the summer months and a firepit to create a cozy spot next to the pool.
We also added a shed to the backyard to store all the bikes. This new structure feels like an extension of the house—it’s not too big or too small, and it has the same siding and exterior lights as the house.
Next up is the pergola and landscape. I’m so excited to share this final transformation with you soon. It’s been a really fun collaboration with my sisters and their families, who have given me full design liberty in this project. I can tell you that the process was one hundred times easier because of their trust and support! They’re such an amazing support system for me and I can’t wait to savor this corner of Virginia Beach with them.
