plant selection for your garden
Hello Spring, is that you I see? Are you prepared for Spring yet? It's time to uncover your outdoor furniture, hose down some of that yellow pollen, and enjoy the new growth this new season brings. But if your yard is feeling a little drab and you want to incorporate some new eye candy into your landscape, consider one or all of the six plants below.
mondo grass
Mondo Grass

Mondo grass is a great groundcover that loves shade or well moisture soil. I love adding mondo grass between pavers to soften the composition in the hardscape.

mexican feather
Mexican Feather Grass

This light green-colored grass is one of my favorite grasses. Its fine texture allows for a lot of movement with the slightest breeze.

blue fescue
Blue Fescue

This small ornamental grass has a beautiful blue-silver coloring and fine texture that can bring in a lot of visual interest to the garden when planted in groups.

golden mop
Golden Mop

This evergreen shrub has beautiful golden foliage. I like to use it for delineating borders in the garden. The bright color of the golden mop works beautifully when layered with deep green shrubs.

hollywood juniper
Hollywood Juniper

The Hollywood Juniper has a beautiful deep green color and twisted branches. I love its unique shape. This eye-catching evergreen makes for a beautiful landscape accent.

golden grass
Sweet Flag Grass

The Sweet Flag Grass is a bright and bold grass groundcover option. The beautiful yellow blades can make an impact when grouped and layered with other types of plants.

As far as the yard composition goes, I like to group plants and layer them in the garden. Arranging and rearranging the plants before planting them feels like a version of an outdoor styling session. And the composition only looks better the more you experiment with your plant selection. But the key element when designing the garden is to focus on grouping your selection.

I find that, by displaying an array of the same plant species, you can create beautiful full clusters that draw your eyes. And alternating the colors, textures, and heights of the greenery is also a must to create a compelling and striking garden structure.
