Replacing the Exterior Door
Oh, the weekend projects. They seem to be happening more and more in 2020 as we shift our routines and take things slower. In an attempt to revive our exterior front door without expending too much money, I sourced a slab door and installed it ourselves. This door design reflects the exact look I wanted for our entryway. And with the help of Alex, we tackled this project on a Saturday afternoon.
The entire door installation process was lengthy. We knew we couldn’t mess anything up so we were very careful about measuring and remeasuring everything before moving to the next step. To start the process, we laid the new door on top of the existing door to mark the hinges and deadlock placement. Once we had a template set, we used a chisel to cut around the hinges area. We then used a hole saw to cut the hole for the deadlock.

How-to-install an exterior door
I have been eyeing exterior doors pull bar handles for such a long time and now I had the perfect excuse to use one. This element was fundamental in elevating the overall look of this entryway. Because we were using a pull handle, we installed a catch ball system instead of installing a regular latch system.
I love it when I let my passion guide my design solutions. Because even when the main focus is a simple pull bar, by making an intentional change, big or small, you can achieve and unify beauty and function. The best design solutions are usually in the details.
