It’s true, this project scared me to some extend. I was shifting from designing an interior space shaped with walls to create an outdoor living area. It felt daunting and yet exciting. This outdoor transformation called for an eating area, a lounging spot, plus a sweet hot tub. What started as a plain patio space turned into an inviting spot for family and friends to create stories. This project is the perfect example of how good design can indeed make life happier.

Once you cross the back patio doors, your eye is first drawn to this fun fire pit area where a white sofa, concrete fire pit, and wooden chairs make your eyes flow. Then, you quickly shift your focus to the sculptural pergola. Sitting under this beautiful pergola the black metal dining table makes its statement along with the geometric chairs in the prettiest nude color. Every color and every tone is feeding off of each other while creating a cohesive aesthetics.

This beautiful outdoor project started last year. The paving was completed just when the weather was getting too cool for #clientruds to be able to enjoy the outdoors. But when we welcomed Spring, we also welcomed a beautiful pergola and the new furniture. And then, without any notice, life presented us with what we called quarantine days. And life at home suddenly had a completely different meaning. All that design planning from last year, from choosing the perfect pavers for this area, to designing a much-needed pergola and choosing a comfortable couch was now so well appreciated. Getting this spot ready for this family could not have come in a better time. Because, with quarantine, we truly understood that our homes are indeed our sanctuaries.

Because this is a large area, I thought it was important to divide the space into sections. The pergola area not only provides shade for the morning sun, but it also helps in creating a space within a space by framing the large dining table. We chose weatherproof materials for the space, like the aluminum dining table and the polypropylene dining chairs, to keep maintenance to a very minimum.

I am sure this lovely outdoor area will be home to many happy family gatherings. I could have not been happier with the final results.
