Kitchen Renovation – Before and After

January 13, 2016

Hold your breath! The after photo is well worth it. This kitchen renovation happened last year. It took place somewhere between Summer, a chaotic house demo, and a trip to IKEA. The space was small, so we started this renovation by taking down a wall to open the kitchen up and let some much needed light in. We had to strip out all of the old and start fresh! The blue cabinets were removed, the hideous linoleum was ripped apart and the room was left in this disoriented shape. No wonder the kitchen felt so confused. Not knowing what it was and what it was supposed to do, soon the kitchen started to grab us all like preys using those nasty old wires to create little human cocoons left there to rotten. And while we tried to keep it cool and pretend that this renovation was not a big deal and we were in no rush to be done, the rest of the house was facing the same situation. The living room, the half bath, the dining room, they were all begging to be rescued. But don’t panic, in the end, we all survived.

Little by little this space started to take shape. We built the wall back up, refinished the floors, primed and painted, primed and painted again, and assembled all those IKEA cabinets in one day and 759 hours. Because every renovation project takes way longer than you think. ALWAYS!

The kitchen is small but it is very functional. When the space is short, the galley-shaped kitchen excels. The work area between fridge, stove and sink works really well. We also opted to conceal the dishwasher behind cabinet panels to give the space a more cohesive look overall. I chose soft gray tones and lots of white to create an open and airy space. I love how this space opens to the dining room. When we gather together here we can chat and snack while we watch master chefs Lucia and Nelson prepare a dish that usually transports us to Brazil in just seconds.

I am really, really happy with the results. The best part of this kitchen renovation is that this project was something we all did together with my parents for them. It is still a dream come true that they are actually living so close to us now. At the end of the day, family is what it is all about.
