1. Shoot Outside

Light is everything in photography, and finding the right light is not easy. So, forget the indoors and start shooting your holiday photos outside. If you can time it right, search for the golden hour. But if you can’t, at least avoid the harsh shadows.

2. Pick the right background

The first thing I do when photographing the kids for our holiday card is to decide what the background will look like. Picking the right background for your photo is getting 50% of the job done when photographing for the holiday season. Greenery or solid backgrounds are great options for a clean look. So next time you are driving around the city, look for building walls that could serve as a great backdrop for the photos.

3. Capture Surprise

We are huge fans of candid moments. We believe that by capturing a casual moment, you are more likely to capture someone’s personality thus telling a better story. So, before you snag your next photo, don’t say “cheese”. Instead, tell the kids your best joke. Let’s be honest, there is nothing better than a big ol’ smile.

4. Use Portrait Mode

Using portrait mode can dramatically change the image. In order to get that blurry background effect, use the portrait mode to add depth to your photos and an instant drama. When using the portrait mode, make sure your subject is well lit and try to avoid backgrounds that are overexposed.

5. Don’t Forget the Grid

Line up edges and walls while using the grid function. The grid lines are a great way to frame a photo and purposely think about how your subject is being seen in relation to the background. The grid is also a great feature when using the rule of thirds.
