Exterior Makeover
I love creating outdoor spaces. When designing for the outdoor spaces you have to think beyond the four walls. In this more expansive approach to design, I always face new challenges, but I welcome each challenge. It is really important to consider not only the durability of each material selected, but also how these materials will integrate with the landscape.
This makeover was all about making the house entrance feel more inviting. The first design problem was the existing narrow walkway. The scale of the stamped concrete path was too small compared to the scale of the steps leading to the house. This odd relationship made the composition look unbalanced and unappealing.
I designed a new walkway installing eight beautiful 16″x72″ flagstone slabs. The new flagstone path features sculptural mondo grass between each slab. The combination of flagstone slabs and mondo grass helps to break up this path visually while creating a bold yet softer layout.
The brick stairs are capped with flagstone. I love the consistent use of the material from the walkway up to the door entrance. This beautiful stone is timeless, and the color choice works well with the light gray brick.

Flagstone Path Makeover
I worked with Grizzard Farms to update most of the landscape. We removed overgrown plants and brought different size plants with various textures into the design. The new plant selection creates a more vibrant and eye-catching scene.
I had already updated the entry door and the two large planters to bring more contrast to the front of the house. You can see the door replacement article here and an easy DIY planter makeover here. And lastly, I replaced the interior shutters from the arched window on the left with drapery. The look of the shutter was not only not working inside that room, but it also made the exterior look dated. I wrote more about the drapery install here.
Can you spot the six differences?
