A Built-in Sofa
When renovating an attic space with accessibility issues, I opted for built-in sofas as the alternative seating option.
This newly renovated attic space features two very unique entry points. You can come in through a pulley elevator or through a hidden 12×60 access door. We knew that no comfortable sofa would ever make its way in this spot unless we built our very own. And that is exactly what we did.
The beauty of a built-in sofa is that it can be fully customized for your space, making the seating area a part of the architecture, no matter how odd this architecture is. I also love that this seating option is particularly appealing to lounge rooms and TV rooms and is the perfect ingredient for this teen space.

This built-in sofa is now a part of the room’s structure, a part of its bones. There is a beautiful dialogue between the sofa and walls that translates into a unified space. This design element doesn’t overwhelm the space. On the contrary, it complements the room.
The white walls get a punch of color with this beautiful rust-colored fabric that is durable and yet soft to the touch. I’ve paired the rust cushions with black tones, black metal, marble, and light-colored wood floors.
I love when we can turn a design problem into a design solution. This odd-shaped room feels like it was built around this sofa and not the other way around.
